Top stories of 2023: By the numbers

There was an abundance of good news from the Case School of Engineering in 2023. From national news attention on 60 Minutes and NBC’s Nightly News to the announcement of a new building project on the Case Quad, it’s been a monumental year and we’ve captured this year’s top moments through our social media pages and website.

1. New Faculty Spotlights
The Case School of Engineering has welcomed a number of new faces to the faculty ranks in the last two years. To get to know them, thousands of people turned to these spotlights.
2. Baja SAE team breaks university records, brings home first place
Breaking university records, CWRU’s Baja SAE team took home first place at the last competition of last season. Now, they’re gearing up for the 2024 season that kicks off next semester.
3. PhD student Hector Gomez Jimenez awarded prestigious fellowship
As the recipient of the 2023 Graduate Degrees for Minorities in Engineering (GEM) PhD Fellowship from the National GEM Consortium, Hector Gomez Jimenez was recognized for his “academic merit and promise and strong desire to impact his chosen field through advanced studies and research.”
4. Veale Faculty Fellows
Designed specifically for faculty interested in exploring entrepreneurship as a path to market for their research, the Veale Faculty Fellowship program welcomed eight fellows this year, four from the Case School of Engineering: Changyong "Chase" Cao, Christine Duval, Ya-Ting Liao and Valentin Rodionov.
5. President Kaler announces Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Research building
In June, President Eric W. Kaler today announced details of Case Western Reserve’s historic new investment in research: a roughly 200,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art structure dedicated to collaborative discovery and innovation.
6. PhD student Aidan Klemm heads to national laboratory
In January, Aidan Klemm will head to Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Tennessee as a part of the Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) Program from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).
7. Great Lakes Energy Institute announces the 2023-24 Think Energy Fellows
ThinkEnergy is an innovative, student-centric program focused on experiential learning. The program aims to enhance energy literacy among the next generation of executives, educators, politicians, and technology experts, and this year 10 engineering students were selected.
8. Engineering students provide power for people of Malawi
A group of Case School of Engineering students brought power to isolated parts of Malawi in Africa. In Kasakula, a village just outside of the Kasungu National Park where Case Western Reserve University Humanitarian Design Corps (HDC) students put the finishing touches on a solar powered community charging station.
9. Students create video game to teach local K-9 students math
Three engineering students developed a video game to help kindergarten through ninth grade students in the David’s Challenge program learn addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
10. CWRU's Society of Women Engineers attend WE23
From Oct. 26 through 28, 12 members from the CWRU Society of Women Engineerings headed to Los Angeles, California for WE23—the world's largest conference for women in engineering and technology. SWE's communication director and third-year biomedical engineering student, Saloni Baral, shared details about the experience.
