MSE's Postdoc Scholar: Andy Chen

Published on Sep. 30, 2020

The week of September 17 is postdoc appreciation week.  The Department of Materials Science and Engineering includes a postdoc scholar, Andy Chen.

Chen, who has been at CWRU since April 2019, loves the “energy and enthusiasm of the student body, who take their studies seriously.”  He also enjoys the autonomy he has to explore various strategies in research.  At CWRU, he feels he has “a good balance between using my existing expertise and an opportunity to explore new methodologies and methods of thinking.”

Chen, a graduate of the National University of Singapore, mainly focuses his research on physical phenomena at the interfaces of materials, both in epitaxial films and grain boundaries, using computational methods aimed at making sense of experimental observations.  Throughout his career, he is most proud of seeing his publications come through and with helping his juniors in collaborative projects when they encounter difficulties in their work.

Chen credits his supervisor, Arthur Heuer, Professor Emeritus, for “providing me with new perspectives with the scientific process and communication skills.”  He also praised Diana Fox, director of postdoctoral affairs, for being a pillar of support for CWRU’s postdoc community.

Chen has also been involved with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Magnetics Society since his days as a PhD student.
