Last month, Cleveland’s American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) section named Xiong (Bill) Yu, chair of Case Western Reserve’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, its Civil Engineer of the Year for his contributions to education, research, service and leadership. Yu’s nominators touted his “love of teaching and mentoring young talents”—guiding them through their degrees, co-authoring papers with them and, eventually, helping them gain employment in world-renowned companies. As part of his award, Yu presented a lecture, “Intelligent Infrastructure: Empowering Civil Engineers to Build Resilient and Sustainable Communities” to the ASCE audience.
