David Sun
Towards an Efficient and Resilient Energy Eco-system
Alstom Grid
White Bldg., Room 411
11:30am - 12:30pm
November 7, 2013

Nearly 20 years after the power industry had been mandated by FERC to introduce wholesale competition,  changes continue in the power industry and beyond. This presentation discusses underlying global drivers that are propelling the changes now and into the future. It considers. for example, the growth of renewable and distributed energy resources (DER), such as demand resource (DR), distributed generation (DG), Solar/PV,  and energy storage (ES).  They can transform electricity generation, delivery, storage, and consumption into value-based business framework consisting of service transactions across multiple energy-oriented entities.  To facilitate discussions during the presentation, basic concepts in power system operation and electricity market operation will be presented first, and conclude with an overview of  major areas of R&D to support  the profound industry transformation.

Dr. David Sun has over 30 years’ experience in the electric power industry. He is a Fellow of the IEEE, and the Chief Scientist for the Network Management Solutions of Alstom Grid.  He received his PhD degree from the University of Texas at Arlington, and MS/BSEE degrees from RPI.

In the 1980’s he did original R&D on advanced EMS network security and optimization applications for real-time power system operations.  In the mid-1990’s, he focused on utility deregulation and wholesale competitive markets. He was directly involved in the development of many major electricity markets worldwide, including PJM, ISO-New England, Midwest ISO, Southwest Power Pool, and ERCOT.  Since 2006, he has been working on Smart Grid with specific focus on distributed energy resources (DER).
