Graduate Student FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

I want to attend your university. How do I apply?

A. Please check the Graduate Admissions page. You should find answers to your questions by following the links from this page.

Graduate Studies has an online application process.

What is the deadline for filing an application?

A. Although there are no hard deadlines for domestic applicants, international application materials should be received in our office (not postmarked) by:

February 1 for Fall semester admission

October 1 for Spring semester admission

Can I check the status of my application on-line?

A. Unfortunately not at this time. The system that is in place does not allow for this at this time. Updates and improvements will allow for this in the future. At this time the EECS department is not acknowledging on-line applications until the supplemental material arrives. When you receive an acknowledgement that we have received your application that means we have the complete application.

What is the minimum TOEFL score needed?

A. The University requires a score of 577 for the written test or 90 for the internet based test.  We also accept an IELTS score of 7.0 or above.  The TOEFL requirement is waived for applicants who have received a degree form an institution within the U.S or other approved English speaking International institutions.

What is the minimum GRE score needed?

A. There is no set minimum score required by our department. The requirement is that all incoming students must take this test excluding students applying for the combined B.S./M.S. program. B.S./M.S. students must submit GRE scores if they are applying to the Ph.D. program.

What is the minimum GPA score needed?

A. Each program has a slightly different minimum, but in general it is around 3.2.

My country does not use your standard for GPA, how can I convert it to receive fair consideration by the faculty?

A. If your country uses a percentage system please convert that score for the GPA. To convert your percentage score to a GPA using this formula:

 4 x <your percent score> / 85 = GPA

It is still better to put in the percentage than leave the GPA blank.

Can I send a copy of my GRE or TOEFL scores now and still be considered for admission?

A. Yes, the admissions committee can review your application with the score copies. However if accepted, you need to submit official scores through the ETS database.

Can I send my financial statement after I am admitted?

A. Yes. However, your I-20 will not be processed until the financial statement is received by International Student Services. If there is a problem with the information this will just further delay you papers. It is better to send them early.

Is there an official financial statement form that can be downloaded?

A. No. There is no official form. All you need is a bank statement stating the amount of support, who the support is from, and a verification from the bank that the money is there. This is a standard support statement.

I am confused about the letter of recommendation? Does this have to be submitted on-line or can it still be sent to you via regular mail?

A. You can submit the letters either way. Some feel it is more convenient to have the letters sent electronically. That is why we have it set up that way. We are trying to make the process as easy as possible.

I want to apply for Computer Science.  Which program and Field of Study do I choose?

A. To select Computer Science you must choose Computer Science (CS).  To Select Computer Engineering you would select (ECM).  Keep in mind these are two completely different disciplines and the applications are reviewed by different committees  Choosing the correct discipline is extremely important.

I would like to get a TA position, how do I go about getting that?

A. Sorry, but all the TA positions are filled by our Ph.D. students. All of our Ph.D. students are required to teach three classes to receive their degree.

Can you send me information about your programs and requirements?

A. Our website and the university's General Bulletin cover all aspects of our graduate programs. Please explore our graduate programs online to learn more.

Where do I mail materials? (Transcripts, Resume, Letters etc.)
