theAdvisor: A Graph-based Citation Recommendation Service

 Literature search is an integral part of the academic research. Academic search services have been developed to help researchers with their literature search, many of which only provide text-based search functionality. Such services are suitable for a first-level bibliographic search; however, they lack the benefits of today’s recommendation engines. In this talk, I will present theadvisor (http://theadvisor.osu.edu), a graph-based academic recommendation service that provides personalized, scalable, and exploratory literature search. Along with an efficient and personalized recommendation algorithm, the service also features result diversification, relevance feedback, and visualization for exploratory search. I will explain the design criteria and rationale we employed to make the theadvisor a better and more scalable web service.


Ümit V. Çatalyürek is a Professor in the Departments of Biomedical Informatics, Electrical & Computer Engineering, and Computer Science & Engineering at the Ohio State University. Dr. Çatalyürek received his Ph.D. in 2000 from Bilkent University, and prior to joining the Ohio State University in 2001, he worked at Johns Hopkins University as a Research Associate and at the University of Maryland as a Visiting Research Scientist. Dr. Çatalyürek is a recipient of NSF CAREER award and primary investigator of several awards from Department of Energy, National Institute of Health, and National Science Foundation. Dr. Çatalyürek was the founding General Chair of 1st ACM International Health Informatics Symposium 2010, and Workshops Chair of IPDPS 2010-2014. Dr. Çatalyürek also serves in the editorial board of the journals Parallel Computing, SIAM Journal of Scientific Computing, Parallel and Distributed Computing, and Network Modeling and Analysis in Health Informatics and Bioinformatics, and on the program committees and organizing committees of several international conferences. He is a member of ACM, SIAM and senior member of IEEE. Dr. Çatalyürek has co-authored more than 160 peer-reviewed articles, and more than 20 invited book chapters and papers. His main research areas are in high performance computing, combinatorial scientific computing and biomedical informatics.
