CSE Staff Spotlight: Sheila Campbell

Published on Nov. 19, 2021

When did you join the CSE in your current role?

I joined the Case School of Engineering as a Department Assistant 4 in May 2016.

What attracted you the most about this position?

What attracted me most about this position is being able to work back in Engineering.  I started in 2000 in Civil Engineering, promoted to a higher position in Mechanical Engineering in 2007 but left the university in 2015. What I enjoy the most is the atmosphere and the people, working with the faculty, staff and students. I love assisting the students and creating friendships.  It is rewarding when the students come back to visit and come to see you to say “hello” and give an update on their lives after graduation.

What might be a typical working day for you?

A typical working day for me is first going over my calendar ensuring that the 3 calendars that I manage are not showing any meetings that are in conflict and checking my email for cancellations or something that needs to be done that day.  After that, I always look at what I have to do and put those items in order of importance as something can come up at any time.  After all of that, it is time to start my day.

Is there one positive experience on the job that stands out to you more?

What stands out for me is knowing that I did an exceptional job since I am very particular in what I do and I want it to be done correctly. There are a couple of things that stand out for me.  The first one that stands out that touches my heart was being recognized by a parent who wrote a letter to our Dean as well as to the Dean of Undergraduate Admissions. Her daughter was undecided on college but was interested in CASE. While on campus on April 2019, I was in Nord on the 3rd floor and they entered the building and of course I asked them if they needed any assistance. After learning they were visiting from Massachusetts and interested in EMAE, I immediately volunteered to take them over to the department to see if there was someone who could show them around, to see if a faculty member had a few minutes to talk with them and to see if there were any handouts to give them.  What makes this extremely touching for me is that she took the time to write this letter and to research who I was as she did not know my last name.  She only knew my name was Sheila.  Her daughter was admitted to CASE where she is majoring in Engineering.  To take this a step further, I reached out to thank mom for the letter and to extend an invitation to her to daughter to come to the Dean’s Office to say “hello” and she did stop by which was very nice as well and to know that her semester was going well.  She also had a great opportunity to work at an internship at a robotics company and she had a great learning experience and might be named as a co-inventor on two patents! Things like this make a huge difference for me knowing that I may have helped with her deciding to come to CASE.

The other thing that stands out for me was being recognized and receiving the 2019 ESPRIT de Corps Staff Award.  It was such an honor to be recognized by your peers.

What do you like about CSE the most?

What I like about CSE the most is knowing that what I do is making a difference to someone.
