Learn more about Jillian Goltl, grants and contracts specialist, in this Q&A spotlight article.

When did you join the CSE in your current role?

I began my role as a Grants and Contracts Specialist for Case School of Engineering in June 2018. I have worked at Case Western Reserve University in other capacities since April 2017.

What attracted you the most about this position?

I was attracted to the tasks of the job as I enjoy working with numbers and staying organized. I was attracted to CSE in specific as numerous people within the Case community stated they enjoyed the culture within CSE.

What might be a typical working day for you?

As a grants specialist, a typical working day consists of both pre- and post-award tasks. Pre-award tasks include communicating with the PI about their proposal, reviewing the funding opportunity details, generating a budget, collecting files from any subcontractors, reviewing documents for compliance, entering the proposal in the proper submission portal, and routing the proposal internally for approvals. Post-award tasks include projecting funds remaining on projects, reviewing/updating effort for personnel, working with accounting to ensure invoices are being sent according to the agreement terms, processing invoices from subcontractors, approving orders, reviewing expenses, and closing out expired projects.

Is there one positive experience on the job that stands out to you more?

I actually have two: anytime a PI submits their very first proposal and anytime an award is made (especially if it is a large/prestigious funding opportunity). I find both types of experiences to be exciting. The proposal process can feel daunting at first. Therefore, the first time a PI submits a proposal is a large learning experience. It always feels invigorating once the proposal is submitted. Anytime an award is made it feels rewarding. All the hard work of the proposal process paid off.

What do you like about CSE the most?

The people. I enjoy the interactions I have with the students, staff, and faculty.
