Applying data science to better predict effect of weather and other conditions on solar panels

Solar panelsIn a new study, a team of researchers from Case Western Reserve University and Gebze Technical University (GTU) in Turkey used data science to determine and predict the effects of exposure to weather and other conditions on materials in solar panels.
Using data science to predict the deterioration of such materials could lead to finding new ways to extend their lifetime, the researchers say.

Frank ErnstMaterials Science and Engineering Professor Frank Ernst, recipient of a 2017 John S. Diekhoff Award for Graduate Teaching, is sure his students know he considers them his “colleagues in science” by making himself approachable and seeking their most creative ideas.
That “open-door” teaching method stems from his own experience. Ernst was born, raised and educated in Germany, where he encountered what he described as “a hierarchical system” of teaching at the University of Göttingen, commonly known as Georgia Augusta, a public research university.

Biomedical engineers win first place in collegiate division at Medical Capital Innovation Competition

Blue ribbon awardA team of biomedical engineers at Case Western Reserve University took home first place in the collegiate division at the inaugural Medical Capital Innovation Competition in April.
The team won for its technology, called NeuroRadVision, which is described as “a computerized decision support software toolkit, employing novel and advanced artificial intelligence and image analysis algorithms to differential recurrent brain tumors from benign radiation-induced treatment effects.”

CSU and CWRU partner to advance the Internet of Things

DataThe “Internet of Things (IoT),” which refers to the vast interconnected network of devices—from cell phones to factory equipment—provides a treasure trove of data and other information that can greatly improve numerous aspects of society.
To capitalize on IoT as a regional economic driver, Cleveland State University and Case Western Reserve University have formed a new partnership to expand research and educational opportunities in this emerging technology. Cleveland State President Ronald M. Berkman and Case Western Reserve President Barbara R. Snyder signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) May 5 to formalize the new collaboration.

Umut Gurkan gives invited lecture on sickle cell disease monitoring system

Umut GurkanUmut Gurkan, assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, gave the Translational Research Featured New Investigator Lecture at the annual meeting of the Central Society for Clinical and Translational Research and the Midwestern Section of the American Federation for Medical Research in April.
Gurkan discussed his work developing a biochip that measures red blood cell adhesion as a means to monitor sickle cell disease. He received the societies’ Featured New Investigator award for the project.
