Chemical engineering students take research from class project to peer-reviewed publication

Light bulb symbolizing bright ideaMost class projects end with a final grade. But a team of chemical engineering students took their capstone project a step further.

Undergraduate students Karun Kumar Rao, Molly Ferguson, Kyle Murphy and Jean Zhao spent the spring semester working on a project for Sherwin Williams: developing a method to characterize the degree of coalescence of resin films.

They developed a way to measure the rate of ion transport through the resin film using an electrochemical cell, finding that the higher the rate of ion transport, the lower the degree of coalescence.

Encouraged by their professors, they submitted the work to a professional peer-reviewed journal, and their paper was published in the December issue of the Journal of Applied Electrochemistry.
