The Institute for Smart, Secure and Connected Systems (ISSACS) and the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Case Western Reserve invite the campus community to attend a special seminar on technological trends in industrial control on Sept. 25.

Scott C. James, president and CEO of Applied Dynamics, will conduct the seminar “The Rapid Modernization of Industrial Data and Control Using Linux-Based Frameworks” from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. in the White Building room 411.

This seminar will discuss trends and technology disrupting traditional industrial control and data. Very-low-cost technologies including open source real-time Linux, low-cost ARM processor architectures, real-time Ethernet protocols, publish/subscribe data protocols, and Precision Time Protocol (PTP) time synchronization overlap with one another to offer data access and control in applications that were once cost prohibitive. Less than a decade ago, open source real-time Linux was deemed not sufficiently high-performing to be used on serious data and control applications. But with steady improvements seen with real-time Linux performance, year-after-year, and high-visibility projects such as the real-time Linux YoctoProject, a rapid shift from expensive commercial Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS) to no-cost real-time Linux is changing the economics of industrial data and control.
