Professor YeongAe Heo

Biographical Sketch

Dr. Heo received her Ph.D from Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at University of California, Davis in 2009. Dr. Heo has expertise in modeling and simulation of nonlinear dynamic structural performance at material, member and system level; and probabilistic hazard and risk assessment for natural and natural hazard-induced technological events in both Civil and Offshore Engineering fields.
Dr. Heo has been selected as an Early-Career Research Fellow of the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine's Gulf Research Program for Award Year 2017Dr. Heo holds three patents for offshore structural systems and is the recipient of the 2012 ASCE Norman Medal for her co-authored paper “SANISTEEL: A Simple ANIsotropic STEEL Plasticity Model” published in the ASCE Journal of Structural Engineering. She was also part of the UC Davis team that won 2nd place at the 1st National Competition on Predicting Progressive Collapse Resistance of RC Structural Systems.
Dr. Heo has identified critical issues in probabilistic explosion risk assessment, which is widely adopted in marine and offshore industries through research projects collaborating with world-class research institutions and industries during her professional career in the Offshore Technology R&D Division at Samsung Heavy Industries from 2010~2013. Dr. Heo joined the Department of Civil Engineering at Case Western Reserve University as Assistant Professor in August 2014. She has contributed to advances in natural and man-made hazard and risk mitigation through numerous professional activities including organizing sessions at major international conferences and serving as an active member of several technical committees in ASCE, ASME, FABIG-UK, and others. She has served as Secretary of the ASCE-SEI (Structural Engineering Institute) Multihazard Mitigation Committee since 2015 and served on the Scientific Committee of ASME OMAE (International Conference on Ocean, Offshore & Arctic Engineering) since 2016.
