May 2019 A group of us attended the 235th Electrochemical Society (ECS) meeting held in Dallas. Adam Maraschky and Katie Steinberg each gave an excellent talk and their presentations were well-received. 
May 2019  Adam Maraschky won the departmental Outstanding Journal Article Award for his work on understanding Li dendrite growth. Congratulations, Adam!
May 2019  Katie Steinberg and Yan Sun have graduated from CWRU. They will both pursue a PhD in the fall. Katie will attend MIT and Yan will go to Xiamen University in China. Good luck to them both!
Apr 2019 Adam Maraschky and his ThinkEnergy team won 2nd place in the Saint-Gobain Design Competition for their project on a smart energy management system for homes with solar power.

Xinyu (Sherry) Liu successfully defended her PhD dissertation on the "Investigation of the Mechanism of Hydrogen Co-evolution during Electroless Deposition of Nickel and Cobalt Alloys". After graduation, she plans to continue working as a research associate in the EMF lab, focusing on rechargeable zinc-air batteries.

Oct 2017 Yukun (Jack) Gong joins the Akolkar group from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and Yan Sun joins the group from Beijing University of Chemical Technology. 
Oct 2017 Jacob Blickensderfer successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis on "Electroless Deposition of Amorphous Iron-Alloy Coatings." He is taking up a position at Lam Research in Oregon. Congratulations to Dr. Blickensderfer and all the very best for his new career! 
Oct 2017 Dai Shen presented a talk on "Neodymium Electrodeposition from High-Temperature Chloride-Based Molten Salts" at the 232nd Electrochemical Society (ECS) meeting in National Harbor, MD. His travel was partially funded by a travel grant awarded by the ECS Electrodeposition Division.

May 2017 Xinyu (Sherry) Liu, Jacob Blickensderfer and Professor Rohan Akolkar presented a talk at the 231st Electrochemical Society (ECS) Meeting in New Orleans, LA. Sherry presented on the mechanistic studies of hydrogen evolution during electroless nickel-phosphorus deposition and Jacob presented on the role of substrate activation during electroless iron-phosphorus deposition. Professor Akolkar gave an invited talk on the electrochemical atomic layer deposition process.

May 2017  Ryan Gusley was awarded the Presidential Fellowship by the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science at Columbia University for his Ph.D. study. 
Apr 2017 Professor Rohan Akolkar was appointed as the faculty director of the Great Lakes Energy Institute. The Great Lakes Energy Institute addresses and empowers research in the most critical areas of energy sustainability.

Apr 2017 Ryan Gusley was awarded the Monroe J. Bahnsen Award by the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering for outstanding achievement in his senior chemical engineering research project. Congratulations and all the very best to Ryan for his future graduate studies at Columbia University!

Mar 2017 Professor Rohan Akolkar was awarded the endowed F. Alex Nason professoship by the Case School of Engineering. He was honored at a chairing ceremony hosted by the school. 
Feb 2017  Kailash Venkatraman began his 6-month internship at Lam Research in Fremont, CA. He will study the mechanism and scaling up of the electrochemical atomic layer deposition process for its application in semiconductor interconnect metallization. 
Jan 2017 Dai Shen was among the 100 students accepted into the Student Program at the 2017 ARPA-E Energy Innovation Summit in Washington, D.C. He was awarded a complimentary registration to the conference and participated in various graduate-level student acitivities.  
Dec 2016 Lu (Jack) Yu has successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis on "Application of Lead Underpotential Deposition for the Characterization of Heterogeneous Surfaces in Electrochemical Systems." He is taking up a position at Pacific Northwest National Lab in Washington. Congratulations to Dr. Yu and all the very best for his new career!

Mar 2016 Dr. Akolkar and Dai Shen participated at an invitation-only congressional showcase on Capitol Hill organized by DOE ARPA-E to present the research on titanium. Dr. Akolkar also presented a poster "Novel Titanium Electrowinning Process Using Specialized Diaphragms"  at the annual ARPA-E Energy Innovation Summit in Washing DC.
Feb 2016 Dr. Akolkar was awared a State of Ohio grant for battery research. He will be leading efforts to develop new materials that enhance batery performance and safety.
Feb 2016 Dai Shen presented a talk on the process modeling of the titanium electrowinning process at the 145th Minerals, Metals and Materials Society annual meeting held in Nashville, TN.

Jul 2015 The EMFLab group and Dr. Akolkar's family enjoyed a beautiful summer day on the beach at the Geneva State Park. In addition to indulging ourselves with delicious food, we cherished the pleasant weather by playing volleyball, Frisbee, chess, Blokus, Bean Bag Toss and other fun board games.
May 2015 Stephen Banik presented a talk on suppressing zinc dendrites using additives and Dr. Akolkar gave a presentation on titanium electrowinning using specialized segmented diaphragms at the 227th ECS meeting in Chicago.
May 2015 Alex Miller successfully defended his M.S. thesis on novel adhesion promoters for direct Cu metallization of glass substrates.
May 2015 Alan Long has won the Robert J. Adler Award, an extremely prestigious and competitive award given to "the senior student in the Case School of Engineering, who through high scholarship, technical creativity, and service to his or her peers, best exemplifies the ideals and talents of Professor Robert J. Adler". Congratulations and all the very best to Alan for his future graduate studies at MIT.
