Engineering researchers named among winners of 2017 BioArt Competition

Illustration of the impact of mercury on red blood cellsA team from Case Western Reserve University’s Biomanufacturing and Microfabrication Laboratory has been named among the winners of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology’s sixth annual BioArt Competition.
 
Umut Gurkan, assistant professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, Birnur Akkaya, a visiting scholar with the lab, and Courtney Fleming, a Cleveland Institute of Art student who is working in the lab as a scientific art intern, won with their illustration depicting the impact of mercury exposure on red blood cells.

The BioArt Competition is designed to showcase the art of life sciences. This year’s winners represented a wide range of biological research, from the Case Western Reserve team’s exploration of mercury toxicity to lung disease to hazardous waste storage safety.
